A Long Day at the Market - Un Día Largo en el Mercado
In this series of paintings, handmade embroidery is incorporated into the artist’s portraits of women, a direct collaboration with a textile designer and a network of women master artisans from Mexico. With the spirited proficiency of true creatives, this group of talented women command our attention with a complex blend of colours, materials, and innovative embroidery techniques, steeped in the handicraft and costume traditions of Latin American communities. The textiles are layered with crystals, semi-precious stones, elaborate flowers, and fine detailing.
This collection is a tribute to Latin American Indigenous folkways. This traditional practice supports the local economy, as well as preserving local dress designs which represent the proud heritage of distinct regions. Embroidery is mostly practiced by women, passed from generation to generation.
