The Chosen One - La Elegida

“I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina — a southern city of grey tones and melancholic tango. Aged 27, I began to explore Bolivia and Peru where my creative world was turned upside down. Streets were packed with people dancing in traditional Latin American dresses for the Day of the Dead. I fell in love with the beauty, visual richness and cultural significance of these stunning dress designs. As an established artist, I conceived of a unique collection of artworks where I would fuse my paintings of women with those embroidered dresses.” Jazmin Sasky

Every embroidered treasure is individually made by master artisans, and combines haute couture finishes, inventive combinations of techniques, as well as a deep love of colour – all of which are rooted in traditional Oaxacan culture.

Further to this, supplementary depth and texture are generated in these textiles through the inclusion of a variety of crystals, semi-precious stones, elaborated and crocheted flowers, along with finely embroidered details like hearts, and other elements. Embroidery work maintains a fascinating and storied history in the Southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. As with other handmade works, local pueblos generate distinct techniques and styles that are specific to their individual towns. Handmade works from San Antonino Castillo Velasco, San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, San Felipe Jalapa de Díaz and Villa Sola de Vega – to name a few – support distinct combinations of details that are readily attributed to the artisans that continue to practice their ancestral traditions.

Born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico, Gaby Vilchis applies her dynamic creative expertise as a designer and entrepreneur to envision, organize and realize custom embroidery pieces for this original collection. Her intricate textile works are incorporated into vibrant original paintings, and are the result of direct collaborations with her extensive network of master artisans. As a strong, modern, creative professional, she strives to empower her fellow women, while simultaneously serving as an adaptable entrepreneur and an inspiring role model.

In order to ship these original works to their final destination safely, I partner with a speciality company called Flash Pack who package every painting with the upmost care and respect. This group of dedicated professionals require approximately 14 business days to effectively prepare shipments of art to be sent from Vancouver, British Columbia to clients throughout the world.
