The Spaces Within

Photo Performance

Each photo performance manifests a complex concept, expressed through action as a means of confronting reality. The notion of space, previously explored in the artist’s books, becomes the stage that supports and deepens this investigation. Using a small selection of props and carefully curated environments, each series is powerful and rich in symbolism.
Each series can be appreciated individually or experienced as a connected sequence of stories.

Rewriting The Recipe

Jazmín was raised on generations of culinary traditions and excellence. Her fondest memories revolve around food and celebrations. Yet she realizes that the only legacy her grandmothers, aunts, and mother truly left her is their recipes. She feels the weight of their sacrifices and the dreams they left behind. Though she has raised her sons with the same values and traditions, this realization frightens her because she knows her true calling lies beyond the kitchen. Now, she must redefine the legacy she hopes to leave her three sons.

The Picket Fence

Bound by family traditions and the comforting rhythms of life in Vancouver, Jazmín begins spending extended periods in Oaxaca, Mexico, where a version of herself long confined by family commitments emerges. Confronted with the swift passage of time and three decades devoted to raising her sons, she feels a restless need to unleash a new self that can no longer be contained. The struggle to find a balance between who she is now and the one she used to be remains unresolved, pulling her in opposite directions.

A Transformation Machine

In Oaxaca, Jazmín encounters a playful, giant doll that dares her to embark on a playful adventure. As she moves through the city’s streets, each corner rewires her thinking, challenges old habits and beliefs, and questions her life choices, bringing her closer to a newly discovered self. After completing the transformational journey, she prepares to return home, only to face a dilemma: how can she embrace this newfound self without compromising her quiet, and loving family life in Vancouver?
